The Quarrymen의 구성원은 계속 변했으나 John Lennon과 그의 친구 Stuart Sutcliffe(스튜어트 서트클리프), Paul McCartney, George Harrison을 주축으로 한다는 것은 변함이 없었다.   The Beatles(비틀즈)가 공연했었던 독일 함부르크의 인드라 클럽 The Quarrymen이란 밴드 이름은 시간이 흐름에 따라 Johnny And The Moondogs로 바뀌었다가 Long John And The Beatles란 이름으로  다시 The Silver Beetles로 바뀌어 갔다. 이들은 1960년 8월 17일 마침내 The Beatles라는 이름으로 결정을 내리게 된다. Beatles라는 이름과 그 흔치않은 표기인 Be'a'tles의 기원에는 여러 설이 존재한다. 대체적으로 이 이름은 John Lennon이 지었다고 여겨지는데 그는 Beatles라는 이름이 Beetles(딱정벌레들)과  Beat 라는 단어에서 유래한 말 장난의 결과라고 설명했다. 또한 후에는 Beat-less를 변형해서 만든 것이라  얘기하기도 하였다. 그러나 Cynthia Lennon(신시아 레논: 첫번째 부인)은 John Lennon이 Beatles라는  이름을 '랜쇼 홀 바에서 술에 취한 상태에서 한 브레인스토밍의 결과' 로서 정하였다고 주장하였다. Cynthia에 따르면 John Lennon은 그 곳에서 les beat와 같은 프랑스어 느낌의 이름을 정하자고 제안하기도  했다고 한다. 1961년 John Lennon은 한 잡지와의 인터뷰에서 다음과 같은 농담을 하기도 했다. 'Flaming Pie(불타는 파이) 위에 갑자기 어떤 사람이 나타나 우리에게 이렇게 말했다. rom this day on you are Beatles with an A(오늘부터 당신들은 A를 쓰는 비틀즈다)'
